eSports Injuries & Orthopedics

As regular competitive sports have been halted during the COVID-19 pandemic, eSports has seen exponential growth. The common ACL injuries and shoulder dislocations don't apply to this group.

The most common injuries are overuse hand injuries such as Dequervain's tendonitis and other tendon injuries from playing over 10 hours a day. eSports can be a lucrative endeavour with some players making over $200,000 a year in sponsorships and prizes.

What can be done? The old "RICE" REST, ICE, COMPRESSION, ELEVATION is always the standard at first, but what to do when its your livelihood?

Working on your ergonomics such as the type of controller and how you hold it can help, as well as your sitting position and how you rest your elbow and shoulders as you play.

Supplements in the gaming world for energy, focus, and clarity are also commonly used with some containing joint supplements such as turmeric, glucosamine, and/chondroitin -- all of which have been studied for joint relief with mixed results.

Like any other sport, eSports requires extensive training, practicing and dedication which will likely continue to lead to overuse injuries.

Talk to your orthopedic surgeon today if you can't shake the time after trying the above remedies.
